Plot summary
Billy Hastings and his mother, Julie, leave Boston for the Vermont countryside after a car accident kills his father and fractures Billy's leg. He finds it hard to settle into his new life and hard to make friends. At the mall one afternoon he comes across a ramshackle petting zoo, where the animals live in poor conditions, and a small pony whose head has been fitted with a taped-on horn. The zookeeper says the pony is bound for slaughter, so Billy strikes a deal and takes her home. He cleans her up and looks after her. The pony is pregnant and foals with Billy's friend Carolyn watching, and the foal grows a horn, a unicorn. Billy names him Nico, from the letters of the word unicorn.
