Plot summary
School breaks up and Nicolas sets off for the coast with his mother, his father and his grandmother, settling in at the Hôtel Beau-Rivage. The sands bring him a summer crew: Blaise, a boy who lives nearby, Fructueux, who eats everything, Djodjo, an English boy, Crépin, who cries, and Côme, who insists he is always right. Then comes Isabelle, the Berniques' daughter; her parents are friends of the family, and she watches Nicolas with wide, anxious eyes. Puzzled by her interest, he concludes that his parents have picked her out as a future wife. He shares the worry with his friends, since he has someone else in mind back home, Marie-Edwige.
