Plot summary
Nicolas's teacher asks the class to say what job each of them would like later on. His friends Alceste, Geoffroy, Clotaire, Eudes, Rufus and Agnan already have their answers, but Nicolas likes his life as it is. A classmate, Joachim, arrives with a new baby brother and grumbles that nobody puts him first anymore. Then Nicolas catches only part of a conversation at home, about inviting his father's boss, M. Moucheboume, and his wife to dinner, and he takes it as news that a baby is on the way and that he will be set aside. When his father proposes a weekend in the woods, Nicolas reads it as the place where he is to be left behind.
