Plot summary
In 1870, five years after the Civil War, Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd earns a living moving through Texas towns and reading newspaper stories to audiences for ten cents a head. On the road he comes upon an overturned wagon, its driver lynched, and a white girl dressed in Kiowa clothing who speaks only Kiowa. Her papers name her Johanna Leonberger, taken by the Kiowa six years before and raised among them. Union troops found her when they broke up a Kiowa camp; she was bound for her aunt and uncle. A patrol sends Kidd to an outpost, where the Indian Affairs agent is three months away. Kidd intends to leave Johanna with Simon and Doris Boudlin, but after she runs off toward a group of Native Americans during a storm, he takes on the journey to Castroville.
