Plot summary
Matalusa mines coltan in Burundi beside his brother Tekno, in a country where past, present and future sit side by side. A guard's rifle kills Tekno, and Matalusa leaves the mines for the road. Neptune, an intersex runaway, sings at an aunt's funeral and then sets out as well. Visions of a child the two have not yet met draw them across the country toward Unanimous Goldmine, a code of unity that marks a community of young people living among computer parts. Neptune's gift for machines carries their words out into the world, and a hacker collective forms around the pair with designs on the powers that control the internet.
