Plot summary
Rain falls on Moominvalley, and everything it touches turns black. The Muskrat, whose riverbank home was destroyed by Moominpappa's new bridge, takes shelter at the Moominhouse and says the soot comes from outer space and that nothing can be done. Moominpappa remembers the observatory in the Lonely Mountains, which holds a telescope that sees far into space, and Moomintroll sets out for it with Sniff and Little My. On the climb they meet Snufkin, a wandering stranger who has heard of a comet that could strike Earth at any time, and he joins them. Moomintroll also finds a golden anklet that Snufkin recognizes as Snorkmaiden's.
