Biography

Richard Quine was an American director, actor and singer who started as a child performer in radio, vaudeville and on stage. Born in Detroit, he moved to Los Angeles at six and made his film debut in Cavalcade (1933) and appeared in Counsellor at Law (1933). After Broadway work in Very Warm for May and the hit stage version of My Sister Eileen, he was signed by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, where his first film was Babes on Broadway (1941). He reprised his stage role in My Sister Eileen (1942). When acting work slowed after World War II, he appeared in Words and Music (1948), Command Decision (1948) and The Clay Pigeon (1949) before turning to direction, often with Blake Edwards. His films include Bell, Book and Candle (1958), The World of Suzie Wong (1960), Paris When It Sizzles (1964), How to Murder Your Wife (1965) and The Prisoner of Zenda (1979). He also produced and directed television. He died in 1989.

    Quine was hired at the last minute by producer Ray Stark to replace Jean Negulesco as director of The World of Suzie Wong, the 1960 Paramount film starring William Holden and Nancy Kwan.
