Trailer

Plot summary

Ten-year-old Chie Takemoto cooks at the small Osaka tavern her father Tetsu is meant to be looking after, while he avoids work and is always short of money. She feeds a hungry stray cat, Kotetsu, which then moves in with them. Tetsu lies to his own father to get money, then loses it gambling. Chie's mother Yoshie separated from Tetsu not long before, and Chie visits her in secret. Both would like the family back together, but Chie reckons the time is not right until Tetsu changes his attitude and takes a job, and she spends her free time hunting for work for him.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Chie the Brat (1981)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Author Jonathan Clements credits Jarinko Chie with revitalising Isao Takahata's career in feature-length animation and with reuniting him with the former Toei colleagues with whom he later formed Studio Ghibli.
  • Chinatsu Nakayama, the voice of Chie, was a sitting member of Japan's House of Councillors when she took the part, and the film was her first in ten years.
  • At their first meeting, manga artist Haruki told Nakayama that he had partly based the character of Chie on her role in the film Gametsui yatsu.
  • To get the Osaka setting right, Takahata reportedly stayed overnight in a doss-house in the city while researching the area with animation director Ōtsuka.
  • The film was made in only a few months, so its animation style was changed to a more solid look because that was easier to animate than the manga's sketched visuals.
  • During dubbing, actor Gannosuke Ashiya's nearsightedness made it hard for him to watch the screen and match his character's mouth movements.
