Plot summary
Jalaluddin Khilji plans to take the throne of Delhi, and his nephew Alauddin Khilji brings him an ostrich and asks for the hand of Jalaluddin's daughter Mehrunisa. On the wedding night a courtier finds Alauddin with another woman, and Alauddin kills him. In Sinhala, Princess Padmavati mistakes the Rajput king Maharawal Ratan Singh for a deer while hunting and wounds him, then nurses him. He had come to obtain rare pearls for Nagmati, his first wife. They fall in love and, with her father's permission, marry.

- During production, Shri Rajput Karni Sena and other Rajput caste organisations protested Padmaavat, vandalised its sets claiming the film showed Queen Padmavati in a bad light, and assaulted director Sanjay Leela Bhansali on a film set.
- In October 2017, while Padmaavat was filming a night scene at Masai Plateau in Kolhapur, attackers set the set ablaze, injuring animals and destroying several costumes.
- Playing Alauddin Khilji in Padmaavat affected Ranveer Singh's personality and behaviour so much that he had to see a psychiatrist to return to normal.
- Shah Rukh Khan declined the role of Rawal Ratan Singh in Padmaavat because he felt it was not 'meaty' enough; a fee disagreement may have contributed. Sushant Singh Rajput also turned it down due to scheduling, and Shahid Kapoor was finally cast with an assurance of a good enough part and a hefty fee.
- After Padmaavat received U/A certification, the chief ministers of Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Haryana banned it to maintain law and order and avert protests, but the Supreme Court of India overruled the bans, citing freedom of speech.
- Malaysia's Home Ministry banned Padmaavat because of its negative portrayal of a Muslim ruler and for touching sensitivities of Islam in the predominantly Muslim nation.
- Padmaavat was released on 25 January 2018 in 2D, 3D and IMAX 3D, making it the first Indian film to be released in IMAX 3D.
- Vipul Amar and Harsheen Arora designed the armour for Rawal Ratan Singh and Alauddin Khilji using historical techniques such as cuirboilli, sculpting, chiselling and inlaying; a team of forty workers took eight months to prepare it.
