Plot summary
Lale is the youngest of five orphaned sisters in a village in northern Turkey. Walking home from school, the girls join their male classmates in a game on the beach. Their grandmother hits them for it and their uncle Erol is furious; from then on they cannot leave the house. School stops, cooking, cleaning and sewing lessons replace it, and in public they must wear drab, conservative clothing. Their grandmother begins showing them to potential suitors, and engagements follow for the older sisters. Sonay slips out to meet a lover, while Lale, barred from football matches, joins her sisters in finding ways around the restrictions.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Mustang (2015)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Weeks before shooting was due to start, a leading French producer pulled out, citing a shortage of funds and director Deniz Gamze Ergüven's pregnancy, which she had learned of a week earlier. Days later Charles Gillibert came on board as producer.
- The football scene was performed at a real match that barred adult men so women could attend, but when the filmmakers were refused permission to film at the last minute, they used images from the television station that broadcast it.
- Deniz Gamze Ergüven cast Tuğba Sunguroğlu as one of the five sisters after discovering and recruiting her at the baggage claim of Charles de Gaulle Airport following a flight from Istanbul to Paris.
- Mustang's score was the first Warren Ellis composed by himself; Ergüven approached him, he initially turned it down because of a busy schedule, and she eventually persuaded him.
- Of the five actresses playing the sisters, only Elit İşcan had acted before, and Ergüven wrote the role of Ece specifically with İşcan in mind.
- The early scene in which the sisters are reprimanded for sitting on boys' shoulders came from the director's own experience as a teenager.
