Plot summary
Jack Murphy is a veteran LAPD detective whose career has stalled and whose marriage has ended; his ex-wife now works as a stripper, and he drinks to get away from both facts. He has also earned the hatred of the mobster Frank Vincenzo by killing Vincenzo's brother. When his ex-wife and her boyfriend are murdered, the case against Murphy is built on evidence pointing to him, and his own department takes him into custody. More deaths follow among people close to him, and he carries the blame. Cuffed to Arabella McGee, a petty thief with a foul mouth whom he arrested on an earlier occasion, he gets out of the station and sets off to learn who is behind the killings while the police hunt the pair.
