Plot summary
Two days before the Normandy invasion, the drop scatters the 82nd Airborne over flooded ground, and paratroopers Jim Southern and William Coolidge Cerino, a former smokejumper with the Triple Nickels, link up with Lieutenant Dean Smith. The Germans have dammed the rivers and flooded half of France, and the 82nd has landed in the wrong place, cut off from its objectives. General Haskel tells the survivors they will not be returning to their units. Allied intelligence wants a Nazi SS officer killed, and a French resistance fighter, Jean Daquin, is to be taken behind enemy lines and given the job. Jean joins the squad, and Smith orders him to stay out of the fighting.
