Plot summary
The most feared outfit in 1940s Shanghai is the Axe Gang, led by Brother Sum, a young killer. His men wipe out rival gangs, and only the city's poorest neighborhoods escape their attention. Pigsty Alley is one of those slums; its residents have been spared only because they have nothing worth taking. Sing and Bone, two petty thieves with no fighting skill, arrive there posing as Axe Gang members to extort money from the tenants, and their act does not hold up. Sing throws a firecracker at the gang's vice general, and the real Axe Gang turns its attention to the Alley.
