Plot summary
In 1971, ten-year-old Charlie Brooks lives in Los Angeles with her mother, Marie. One morning Charlie wakes to find a man she has never met cooking in their kitchen. Marie introduces him as their new cook, Henry Joseph Church, and Charlie wants him gone. Marie had been seeing Richard Cannon, a wealthy entrepreneur who was married, and after he died his will set aside money to support her. She had been given a diagnosis of terminal breast cancer, and the funds were meant to cover six months, the time doctors expected her to live. Learning that Church's salary is assured for the rest of his life, Marie lets him stay, on the condition that Charlie is never told about her illness.

- In April 2014 Samuel L. Jackson, Uma Thurman and Juno Temple were announced as cast, but that October Eddie Murphy joined the film, replacing Jackson, who had to drop out due to a scheduling conflict, with Bruce Beresford directing.
