Plot summary
Donald Morton has Asperger syndrome, drives a taxi in Spokane, Washington, and keeps a pet cockatiel for company. He likes patterns and routines, performs complex sums in his head, and leads a self-help group for autistic adults. Isabelle Sorenson, who also has Asperger's, signs up for the group. At a park meeting where members practice telling personal stories, the two discover a shared outlook and warm to each other. Isabelle asks Donald to lunch; the next day they visit the zoo. Gregory, another member, had wanted Isabelle to accompany him to a Halloween party, and Donald and Isabelle agree to meet there in costume instead.
