Plot summary
At the opening of a new irrigation canal, the village asks Radha, its mother, to open the gates, and she recalls her wedding to Shamu. His mother borrowed money for the ceremony from the moneylender Sukhilala. When the terms were disputed, the village elders ruled for Sukhilala, and the couple had to hand him three-quarters of what they grew as interest on the 500-rupee loan. Shamu labored to bring more of their stony ground into use, and a boulder crushed his arms. Ashamed of his helplessness and mocked for living off his wife's work, he decided he was no use to his family and left. Radha stayed, worked the fields with her children, and gave birth again. Sukhilala offered to ease her poverty if she married him, and she refused.
