Plot summary
Max Doyle is eleven and loves performing magic, which disappoints his father and brings ridicule from his older brother, Colin. While he is doing laundry in the basement, he hears voices and a hand reaches out through the wall. The wall hides a tunnel, and the evil ghost Phears and his followers are inside it. Phears is set on leaving the ghost world to live in the physical one, something he can do only on Halloween. Then the ghosts of two children, Nicky and Tara, appear in Max's room. Nobody but Max can see or hear them, though they can move objects. The siblings need his help to learn who they are and what became of their parents.
