Plot summary
In December 1981, Nowak, a master electrician from Warsaw, arrives in London with three workmen who know no English. They are there to strip and renovate a house for a boss back in Poland, a man connected in some way to Nowak's wife, Anna. The job is illegal, so the men stay indoors and sleep on the site while Nowak, the only one who understands the language, goes out for supplies and food. The men are paid in zlotys, and a month of this work equals a year's wages at home. Then a telephone operator tells Nowak that the lines to Warsaw have been cut after a military coup in Poland.
