Neil Innes

Biography

Neil Innes was an English musician, comedian and writer who began playing music while studying fine art at Goldsmiths College. He joined the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band during those years and helped shape its comedy rock sound, writing I'm the Urban Spaceman, which brought him an Ivor Novello Award in 1968, and Death Cab for Cutie, heard in the Beatles film Magical Mystery Tour (1967). He became a regular collaborator with Monty Python, sometimes described as the seventh Python, contributing songs to Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975) and taking small parts in Jabberwocky (1977) and Life of Brian (1979). With Eric Idle he created the Rutles, a Beatles parody for which he wrote the songs, seen in All You Need Is Cash (1978). He also made the BBC series The Innes Book of Records and wrote and voiced the children's cartoon The Raggy Dolls.
