Plot summary
Gianni, middle-aged and out of work, shares a flat in Rome's Trastevere with his 93-year-old mother, who is demanding and capricious. He spends his days between the apartment and the local wine bar, and his unpaid communal charges have left the other residents wanting him and his mother evicted. The day before Ferragosto, Alfonso, the building manager, comes to collect what he is owed, and Gianni proposes a trade: the debt forgiven in exchange for looking after Alfonso's mother, Marina, while Alfonso takes a spa cure for his dermatitis. Alfonso then presses a second guest on him, his aunt Maria, and the doctor Marcello asks Gianni to take in his mother, Grazia, who must avoid a long list of foods and take her medicines at fixed hours.
