Plot summary
An engineer by training, Scanio Libertetti makes his living repairing coffee machines. A speeding fine brings him to a speed awareness course in a small town in the hills of northern Italy, and there he is asked to explain what happened. His account reaches back a year, to the people around him: childhood friends who are quick to criticize him, an uncle who keeps urging him to sort his life out, and Helena, a young English woman who has moved to Italy to work as a consultant in human resources and appears to be the only one who understands him.
