Plot summary
When the pope dies, the cardinals in conclave vote through several rounds in which no main candidate reaches the quorum, until Cardinal Melville, who had not been a frontrunner, is chosen. In St. Peter's Square the faithful wait for the name to be announced, but the new pope suffers a panic attack and never appears on the balcony. The Holy See's spokesman tells the press that the pontiff has retreated to pray and reflect and will appear within hours. Under Church law the election remains unfinished and nobody may leave the Vatican until the name is made public. Concerned by his distress, the cardinals summon Professor Brezzi, a psychoanalyst, whose examination of Melville yields no explanation for his anxiety.
