Plot summary
Menashe lives in Borough Park, Brooklyn, and earns little from clerking at a grocery store, where the manager gives him a hard time. Since his wife died a year ago, his son Rieven has been staying with an aunt and with Eizik, a brother-in-law who has done better and thinks little of him. The rabbi's ruling keeps the boy there: Rieven can live with his father only once there is a second parent at home. His first marriage was unhappy, and he does not want another. He goes about without the black coat and top hat other men wear in public. Menashe and Eizik argue before the rabbi, who grants the boy a week with his father, until the memorial service for Menashe's wife, and repeats that a two-parent home is required.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The plot of Menashe is loosely based on star Menashe Lustig's own life; he told the Los Angeles Times that unlike the character, he is not a schlimazel by nature, maybe only a schlimazel by situation.
- Joshua Z. Weinstein shot Menashe over the course of two years in Borough Park, Brooklyn, home to one of the largest Orthodox Jewish populations outside Israel, choosing it because he wanted authenticity.
