Plot summary
The bank belongs to Bill Anderson's father-in-law, Mr. Jacoby, and Bill's post there carries no real duties, so the family does not take him seriously. He is out of shape, keeps candy at his home and his office, and lives with his wife Jess in a house her father provided. Jacoby, a community pillar, is considering a run for mayor. Bill is trying to buy a doughnut franchise from the Whitmans so that he and Jess can stop depending on Jacoby's money. At a donation ceremony, he meets a teenager known as the Kid, who is hiding from the school principal over marijuana, and Bill covers for him. The principal proposes a school mentoring program and Bill signs up. Bill notices Jess in conversation with Chip Johnson, a local newscaster.
