Plot summary
Max and five other children were made in a lab called the School, bred from human and avian DNA so that all six of them have wings. Jeb Batchelder took them out of the School four years ago, and two years ago he disappeared. Now Max, Fang, Iggy, Nudge, Gazzy and Angel live on their own in an isolated mountain house, where the food is running out and Max still wants to stay. Erasers, the wolf-human hybrids the School keeps as guards, seize Angel. The flock flies off to get her back, with Max and Fang heading for the School's location and the younger children going their own way.
