Plot summary
The residents of Morgantown, Pennsylvania, hear a voice booming from the mountain above them in 1868, and the Department of the Interior sends John Strock to find out what is causing it. Strock borrows a balloon from Philip Evans so he can view the Great Eyrie from the air. Evans, his fiancée Dorothy Prudent and her father ride along. Rockets fired from inside the mountain strike the balloon, and the four are taken prisoner by Captain Robur aboard the Albatross, a 150-foot airship. Robur commands a hand-picked crew of like-minded idealists, and he crosses the globe to stop wars, making war on nation states if that is what it takes. His captives learn how the ship works and see the technical advances he has built into it.
