Plot summary
Devi Pathak teaches at a computer training center in Varanasi. When the police catch her in a hotel room with her student Piyush, Inspector Mishra films her and demands three lakh rupees from her father, Vidyadhar Pathak, a poorly paid Sanskrit professor with a bookshop. Rumors spread through the town, and Devi is shunned at work while her father looks for the money, letting Jhonta, the boy at his shop, dive for coins in the Ganges during local betting contests. Deepak Kumar, born into the Dom caste, studies civil engineering at a polytechnic college while his family performs funeral rites at the cremation ghats. He loves Shaalu Gupta, a higher-caste girl who reads poetry and urges him to focus on his upcoming exams.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- When Masaan was released for streaming on Hotstar, the version viewers found was heavily censored, causing a controversy involving the streaming platform and the film's producers.
- Masaan folds Urdu and Hindi poetry by Akbar Allahabadi, Mirza Ghalib, Dushyant Kumar and others into its story. Lyricist Varun Grover called it a conscious tribute: he wanted Shaalu (Shweta Tripathi) to read poetry and shaayari as a hobby, common among young people in love in Northern India but rarely shown in Hindi films.
