Plot summary
Debika Chatterjee, a Bengali Hindu immigrant, lives in Stavanger with her husband Aniruddha and their children, Shubh and five-month-old Suchi. Norwegian Child Welfare Services employees known as Velferd visit the family regularly after a Norwegian neighbor reports them. During one of those visits, the workers separate Shubh and Suchi from Debika. The authorities base the decision on a culture clash and what they describe as a misinterpretation of Debika's behavior. The Chatterjees are told they are unfit to hold custody. Debika refuses to accept the loss of her children and begins a legal fight against the Norwegian child welfare authorities to bring them home.
