Plot summary
Lala Kedarnath is the eldest of his siblings and the only brother of Gayatri, Durga, Laxmi and Saraswati. In Old Delhi he runs Premlata Chat Bhandar, the chaat shop his grandfather started, with his helper Gaffar. Before she died, their mother made him promise that he would marry only once all four sisters were settled in homes of their own. Finding grooms proves hard: prospects turn away from Laxmi because of her complexion, from Durga because of her weight, and from Saraswati because she behaves in a masculine way. Lala's duty to his sisters also keeps him from marrying Sapna, whom he has loved since childhood. Sapna chooses to wait for him, but her father Harishankar presses her to accept a match he has picked.
