Plot summary
Set before the events of Thor, the short follows Agent Coulson as he drives toward Albuquerque, New Mexico. He pauses at a convenience store to buy snacks. While he is in the back of the store, two robbers walk in and demand the money from the register. They notice a car outside and ask whose it is. Coulson comes forward. The short is a self-contained look at one day for a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, made to show more of Coulson than his bureaucratic role. It was filmed over two to three days and included as a special feature on a home media release.

SPOILER
Clark Gregg learned that Marvel was launching a short-film program in the same phone call that told him Agent Coulson would be killed off in The Avengers. Gregg thought the One-Shots could build the audience's relationship with Coulson and make his death land harder.- The Consultant was written second because A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Thor's Hammer had used up 80% of the budget Marvel set aside for the two shorts, leaving only enough money for "two guys talking".
- The Agent Carter One-Shot partially inspired the MCU television series Agent Carter, and composer Christopher Lennertz went from scoring the short to scoring the series.
- Item 47 ran 12 minutes, far longer than the earlier One-Shots' maximum of four, and partially inspired the MCU television series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
- The short saved money by reusing visual effects shots of 1940s New York from Captain America: The First Avenger, and was filmed over five days.
- The fake CBS pilot Caged Heat, shown in the short, was given a new musical theme by Mike Post, an icon of 1980s TV music.
