Plot summary
In New York, Marjorie Morgenstern brings her boyfriend Sandy Lamm to her family's synagogue, and her parents hope the department store heir will marry her. She turns down his proposal and spends the summer as a counselor at a Catskills camp. Marjorie and her friend Marsha Zelenko slip away one night to South Wind, a resort for adults, where Noel Airman, the social director, notices her during a rehearsal. The owner, Maxwell Greech, catches her, but Noel vouches for her and offers her a job. Noel, a law school dropout and would-be dramatist, renames her Morningstar. Wally Wronkin, an aspiring playwright who writes Noel's stage act, becomes her friend and holds a romantic interest in her, and Noel warns Marjorie that she is too naive for him.
