Plot summary
The documentary looks at the relationship between Leonard Cohen, the writer and singer, and Marianne Ihlen, his Norwegian muse. They spend their early days together in Greece, a period of free love and open marriage. The two live on Hydra, a Greek island, during the 1960s and 1970s. Ihlen becomes the inspiration for several of Cohen's songs, among them So Long, Marianne and Bird on the Wire. Cohen becomes a successful musician, and their love evolves.
