Plot summary
Laila, a teenager with cerebral palsy, studies at Delhi University, where she writes and composes music for an indie band. She develops feelings for the band's lead singer, who does not return them. A scholarship wins her a semester at New York University, and despite her father's doubts she moves to Greenwich Village with Shubhangini, her orthodox Maharashtrian mother. In her creative writing class she meets Jared, a young man assigned to help her, and Khanum, a blind activist of Pakistani-Bangladeshi descent. Laila is drawn to Khanum's independence and to the way Khanum regards her own disability. The two spend much of their time together, acting as each other's caregivers.
