Plot summary
Amanda is eleven and her sister Laurel is fifteen. Amanda goes by Manny and Laurel by Lo. Their mother has died, and the girls have run away from more than one foster home, sleeping wherever they can find room, including in model homes. Then Laurel learns that she is pregnant, and the sisters find that the crisis is more than the two of them can handle. They have nowhere else to turn, so they abduct Elaine, a clerk at a store that sells baby supplies, believing she can help with the pregnancy. The woman they have taken may need the sisters as much as they need her.
