Plot summary
The Indian national football team returns from the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki with a 10-1 loss to Yugoslavia, and the All India Football Federation blames its coach, Syed Abdul Rahim. Rahim asks to build another team from new players. The other federation members are reluctant, though President Anjan grants the request. Rahim then scouts across the country, assembling a side that includes Chuni Goswami and P. K. Banerjee of Calcutta, Tulsidas Balaram of Secunderabad and Peter Thangaraj of Hyderabad. Roy Choudhary, an influential journalist from Calcutta, bears a grudge against Rahim, who has selected very few players from that city.

- Principal photography on Maidaan began on 19 August 2019 and was hit by long delays from the COVID-19 pandemic and Cyclone Nisarga, not finishing until May 2022, roughly two and a half years later.
- Maidaan's music was first assigned to composer Amit Trivedi with lyricist Amitabh Bhattacharya and background-score co-composer Mayank Mehra, but production delays pushed them all out, and A. R. Rahman was hired to replace the quartet.
