Plot summary
Lawrence "Rip" Smith leads a firm that conducts polls and consumer surveys, and it trails the company of his rival George Stringer. A survey his friend Hoopendecker made in Grandview matches one Stringer made nationally, so Rip decides the town mirrors the whole country and can supply his results. He takes on a client who wants a survey on progressive education, promising the findings will hold for the nation, and travels with his team to Grandview pretending to be insurance salesmen. There Mary Peterman is pushing the mayor and council to expand the town with a new civic center. Rip wants Grandview to stay as it is, so he speaks against her plan and the council shelves it. Mary answers with an angry editorial in the newspaper her family runs.
