Plot summary
Jack Foster manages the Flite Gallery in London, which belongs to the family of his wife, Ruth. They are selling it, and since Jack put in work but no money, he has no say in the decision. He proposes raising the funds by selling the Italian house he owns with his father, Robert, an artist whose London flat doubles as his studio. Jack has not yet told Robert that he and Ruth are divorcing. Robert warns him the property, unvisited for years, is not what Jack pictures. In Tuscany the warped front door gives way when Jack shoulders it, and the state of the place is worse than either expected. Robert steers Jack away from selling, so Jack drives into town and knocks over a podium and outdoor tables at Natalia's restaurant.

- The Italian house in Made in Italy is Villa Fontanelle, a private villa near Montalcino, Italy, and parts of its interior were deliberately "deconstructed" so the home would appear old and shabby.
