Plot summary
Zora Mathews is a high school senior in the Bay Area and a science prodigy who has her heart set on M.I.T., while her mother Sarah, who owns a store called African Queen, wants her at Berkeley. After a blood test shows Zora's group could not come from the parents she knows, Sarah admits that Zora was conceived with sperm from an anonymous donor rather than with her late husband Charlie. Zora and her friend Tea Cake Walters get into the sperm bank's computer records and find a name, Hal Jackson, who turns out to be a flamboyant local car salesman whose ads use live animals. He is also white, which neither Zora nor Sarah expected.
