Plot summary

An essay documentary examines the influence of The Wizard of Oz on David Lynch's work. The idea comes from a 2001 New York Film Festival Q&A, where Lynch said he thinks about The Wizard of Oz every day. The documentary revisits his career, from his earliest short, The Alphabet, to the series Twin Peaks: The Return, to map that connection. It is divided into six chapters, each led by a different filmmaker or critic who offers a personal take. Hundreds of film clips illustrate the links between Lynch's images and The Wizard of Oz. A drone-shot sequence in the Central City Opera House in Central City, Colorado, bookends the film.
