Plot summary

Nearly £1,000 has gone missing from the room of Ferdinand de Levis, a wealthy Jewish guest at an upper-class gathering, and another guest, Captain Dancy, is implicated by the evidence. The host would rather the affair were kept quiet, and when it cannot be, he sides with Dancy and sets about damaging de Levis's standing among the company. The story is drawn from a 1922 play and treats antisemitism directly, placing prejudice in Britain rather than in a foreign or historical setting. It was made as British films were increasingly depicting the mistreatment of Jews, a trend connected to the spread of anti-Semitism in Nazi Germany.
