Plot summary
Richard Loving is a white bricklayer from Caroline County, Virginia. Mildred Jeter, a local woman of black and Native American ancestry, is a friend of his family. They fall in love. Mildred learns she is pregnant, and they decide to marry, despite Virginia's anti-miscegenation laws making their union illegal. In 1958 they drive to Washington, D.C., for the ceremony. Richard intends to construct a house for Mildred under a mile from where her family lives. Deputies raid Mildred's home and arrest them. Richard shows the marriage license, and Sheriff Brooks says it means nothing in Virginia.

- The Lovings' real house in King and Queen County was too small to film in, so the production used a 1920s farmhouse south of Richmond, stripping its interior, pulling out the kitchen and rebuilding the back porch to match photos.
- Jeff Nichols cast Nick Kroll as ACLU lawyer Bernie Cohen after spotting him on television in 2014 while filming Midnight Special in New Orleans, thinking Kroll looked remarkably like Cohen.
