Plot summary
Ava, a marriage counselor, and Charlie are on their honeymoon when word comes that her parents are separating. Bradley and Betty had seemed to everyone a perfect couple, and their thirty years together shaped Ava's ideas about marriage. Betty has learned of an affair Bradley had twenty-five years ago and will not live with him. Ava brings her father home without consulting Charlie, promises it will not be for long, and turns her professional attention to reconciling the two of them. Her code of ethics keeps her from taking her own parents as clients, so she passes them to colleagues. Between the sessions and the arranging, her attention to her parents begins to affect her marriage to Charlie.
