Plot summary
In a village beside a great sea, inventing clever household gadgets is what people admire most. Each year the villagers hold a contest for the best new invention, and Oskar, Lotte's father, is one of their finest makers. Adalbert the Rabbit is his chief rival, and Adalbert's wife enters the contest too. On the eve of the competition, Lotte and her friend Bruno come across a book that has been soaked by the sea, and Susumu, a gardener from faraway Japan, climbs out of it. Susumu begins teaching the villagers judo throws, ahead of a big judo competition they mean to put to use in everyday life.
