Plot summary
Fern Sreaves leaves the Army after her father dies and comes back to the Missouri Ozarks, hoping to find her brother, Billy. In the woods she comes across a boy named Cecil. Social worker Mike Rivers can find no record of the child. People in the area say the boy could be the Tatterdemalion, a spirit that appears as a child and keeps its youth by taking love from strangers. Billy believes his sister abandoned him years ago and wants nothing to do with her. Fern is a loner and takes the boy in, then begins asking anyone who might know who he is.
