Plot summary
Chase Phillips returns home after treatment for a nervous breakdown. Her husband, Richard, has hired Elizabeth Cole to look after her. Chase objects to having a helper and treats Elizabeth with contempt. She asks Elizabeth what she plans to do with the money she earns, and Elizabeth answers that the money is not her reason. Chase's two young sons come back to the house the same day Elizabeth arrives. Jason is eager to see his mother, while Little Richard is hostile toward her. Richard befriends Elizabeth while she plants tomatoes, and this creates friction between him and Chase.
