Plot summary
Estranged from his mother for years, James Findlay returns to her house only to settle what she left behind. Her letters name two properties: a small, ordinary one and a large mansion she urges him never to visit again. He cannot recall his early childhood but has a vague sense of having lived in that mansion, so he ignores her instruction and moves in. There he meets Eve Turner, an American who lives nearby in renovated stables. He also discovers signs that as a child he suffered a breakdown connected to visions of a creature called the Owl Man. His friend Allen Milton, whose own father is seriously ill, cannot understand the decision.
