Plot summary
In 2044, the United States is in economic collapse, and organized crime has grown. A mutation has given ten percent of the population minor telekinetic powers; they are called TKs. Thirty years later, time travel is invented and outlawed, and tracking technology makes it nearly impossible to dispose of bodies. Crime bosses send their enemies back to the past, where hired guns known as loopers kill them and take the silver bars strapped to the victims. A looper's contract ends when the syndicate sends his older self back for him to kill, a task called closing the loop. Joseph "Joe" Simmons is a twenty-five-year-old looper in Kansas City, managed by Abe, a man from the future. When Joe's next target arrives without a hood, it is his older self.

- The Chinese release of the film reintegrates a substantial number of scenes set in Shanghai, a move requested by the Chinese production company DMG Entertainment to further appeal to Chinese audiences. Several of those scenes were shortened or cut for the American release.
- Filming began in Louisiana on January 24, 2011, and makeup artist Kazuhiro Tsuji created the prosthetics that Gordon-Levitt wore in the film so that he would physically resemble Willis.
- Looper was written and directed by Rian Johnson, who originally conceived it as a short film starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt shortly after making Brick, his first feature.
