Plot summary
A string of family murders in 1990s Oregon falls to FBI agent Lee Harker. In each case a father kills his household and then himself, leaving a letter marked with satanic glyphs and signed Longlegs. The handwriting matches no member of any family. Lee, who shows signs of clairvoyance, decodes the letters and finds a pattern: every family had a nine-year-old daughter born on the fourteenth, and the killings fell within six days of her birthday. The dates mark an occult triangle on a calendar, with one date left empty. At her home, Lee takes a call from her mother, Ruth, and then receives a coded birthday card from Longlegs. Longlegs has left no trace at any scene.

- Osgood Perkins based the film's evil dolls, which drive fathers to murder their families, on the killing of JonBenét Ramsey: a life-size replica doll of her, in a pageant dress, sat in a cardboard box in the basement 15 feet from where she was killed.
