Plot summary
Peter and Marcia, with their dog Cricket, drive out for a weekend of camping at a secluded beach. Marcia did not want to come and there is tension between the couple; it appears each may have a lover. On the road Peter tosses away a cigarette butt that starts a small fire, and he runs over and kills a kangaroo. At the edge of a wooded area by the beach they set up camp and do more damage: they take and destroy an eagle's egg, kill a dugong and partly chop down trees. Peter and Marcia bicker as they settle into the camp.

A planned ending for Long Weekend in which the animals decide there is no hope and leave it to another man to kill Peter was cut because shooting the scene with animals was too difficult.- Everett De Roche wrote the script for Long Weekend in ten days and showed it to Colin Eggleston, who had worked with him at Crawfords and decided to make the movie.
- Everett De Roche started writing Long Weekend with no outline, no notes or research and, by his own account, no knowledge of screenplays; he made the story up as he went with only a vague plan for an environmental horror story.
