Plot summary
Jim is a twenty-seven-year-old aspiring writer from Goshen, Indiana. He spent two years in New York City, where his writing brought him no success and he earned a living walking dogs. He moves back into his parents' house. His brother Tim, thirty-two and recently divorced, has also moved back home and works in the ladder factory owned and operated by their father Don and their mother Sally. Jim has no interest in the family business and resists pressure to start working there. At a bar he meets Anika, a nurse.

- Lonesome Jim's planned $3 million deal with United Artists collapsed when the studio's president, Bingham Ray, unexpectedly resigned. Producer Gary Winick's company InDigEnt rescued the film with a $500,000 budget, a Panasonic AG-DVX100 MiniDV camera, and a shoot cut from 30 days to 17.
- To save money, screenwriter James C. Strouse, a native of Goshen, Indiana, cast two of his own nieces and worked as location manager, using his parents' home and their ladder factory as the film's main filming locations.
